Let’s be honest: most surveyors didn’t get into this line of work because we dreamed of being on camera. Many of us are far more comfortable behind a damp meter than in front of a lens. Personally, I’ve always said I’ve got a face for radio—but sometimes, you’ve got to step outside your comfort zone.
That’s exactly what I did recently, when I spent the day with Lee Robinson, a long-standing member of the RPSA whom I've known for many years. Lee has since gone on to launch his own practice—Ashton Lee Surveyors—and has fully embraced the world of digital media in the process.
Lee invited me to take part in his growing podcast and YouTube series, "Ask the Surveyor," filmed at his impressive Black Cherry Studio. It’s a converted garage, but you wouldn’t know it: air-conditioned, soundproofed, stylishly designed, and fully equipped with multi-camera setups, studio lighting, mics, and full editing and production support. It’s the real deal. And yes, it’s available for hire at around £150 a day, complete with production crew if needed.
The podcast itself was entirely unscripted—we sat down and talked. About the state of the market, about ways surveyors can attract more work, and about what clients are really looking for in today’s world. Naturally, there was a surprise curveball (the Scottish Single Survey—thanks Lee!), which reminded me that even after years in the profession, there’s always more to learn.
Now, I’m not suggesting every surveyor rushes out to build a broadcast studio in their garden. However, what Lee is doing raises a bigger point: the role of social media and digital communication in our profession is growing, and rapidly. Clients are increasingly finding us online. They're watching short videos, reading brief posts, and getting a sense of our expertise before we’ve even spoken to them.
That can be a daunting prospect, particularly if the idea of filming yourself makes you break into a sweat. But it can also be a powerful opportunity. Social media isn’t about being flashy. It’s about being visible, being human, and building trust.
At the RPSA, we recognise that many of our members might be curious about digital tools but unsure where to begin. That’s why we’re actively implementing new resources to help. Our newly appointed digital lead, Ryan Skidmore, is already working hard behind the scenes to develop support and guidance tailored for independent and small-practice surveyors. Watch this space – we're here to help you navigate this evolving landscape.
In fact, as Chairman, I believe in supporting our RPSA members, and I, or any other member of the RPSA Council, would be more than happy to sit down and add to or be involved in some of your media content. We believe in supporting our members in every way we can.
We’ve got some filming of our own underway—details to follow, but let’s say it’s worth keeping an eye out.
In the meantime, if anyone is considering trying something new to promote their business, I’d be more than happy to chat or help in any way I can. And if you’re ever looking for a studio space that’s already “lights, camera, action” ready—well, Black Cherry Studio is worth a look.
We’re all here to raise the profile of our profession. And sometimes, to do that, you just have to hit “record.”
