The Government’s new Construction Jobs Plan identifies chartered surveyors as one of 30 priority construction occupations. It forecasts 2,002 additional roles between 2025 and 2035, representing growth of 12.2%, and classifies demand as elevated. The occupational category covers the wider surveying profession, rather than building and residential surveyors alone, but it provides a positive indication of future demand.

That demand is being driven by plans for new housing, major infrastructure and the upgrading of millions of existing buildings. The plan also highlights retrofit, building inspection, digital construction and AI-supported professional work, while recognising that professional judgement and practical competence remain essential.

For building and residential surveyors, the message is therefore about competence as well as numbers. Expectations around accountability and continuing professional development are increasing, while small and independent practices need accessible routes into training and professional progression. The RPSA will continue to ensure that the experience and needs of residential surveyors are represented as these new skills and competence frameworks develop.
